VETERAN

I’ve worked my way through the Civil War Veterans and want to do one World War I Veteran for the Rossville Cemetery Association website, Harry Barnes Plumstead. I believe some of his family is still in the area, and if they have any photos or other items they would like to see included in the archives, please contact me.
Harry was born on April 5th, 1892, to John and Mary Plumstead. Most of his life he earned a living doing farm work, though he was employed a short time at Fabrikoid Plant/Dupont Plant in his younger days before entering the military for World War I.
Originally from the Middle Hope area, he lived his entire life in the Town of Newburgh, including Fostertown. He was employed on Hugh Robinson’s farm for many years.
In March of 1918, Harry received notification he was to register for the draft during World War I. On June 5th, 1918, he registered for service in Middletown, along with other area young men. He was inducted on July 27th, into Co. C, 67th Infantry as a Private. After being inducted, he was sent to Camp Sheridan. He was honorably discharged on March 13th, 1919.
After serving, he returned home to Newburgh and married Adelaide Wermuth in 1924. They had one daughter, Patricia. He returned to his roots and pursued a career in horticulture for the balance of his life. Harry left us on March 10th, 1942. Thank you for your service soldier.
